My Journey with Border Perspective
Honestly, I didn’t know where to start with this blog. In just a short time, I’ve experienced so many eye-opening things through Border Perspective. But I guess the best place to begin is before I even joined.
At the start of the summer, I didn’t really have any big plans. Maybe I’d get a summer job, but my main focus was on preparing to enlist in the Air Force. I had shared my future plans with my family and my church family, and I was excited about the opportunities and growth I thought the Air Force could bring.
Then Jenn, BP’s Operations Director approached me and asked if I’d be interested in interning with Border Perspective. My mom had mentioned the internship before, since she had also heard about it from Jenn, but at the time I wasn’t interested. I honestly just wanted to enjoy my summer before moving on to the next chapter of my life. It took some convincing, but eventually I decided to give it a try.
I came into the internship with the mindset that I would learn some new skills and grow more comfortable meeting people with different thoughts and perspectives than my own. Looking back now, I’m so glad I said yes.
One of the first moments that really stood out to me was when we welcomed our very first team. It was actually two separate groups: one was a family and the other was a youth group with their leaders. They came from two different states, with different backgrounds and perspectives. At first, they didn’t mingle much, they kept to themselves. But as the trip went on, I watched them slowly open up to one another. By the end, they had built deep connections and were sharing parts of their stories they hadn’t told anyone before. Seeing that transformation happen was such a beautiful experience.
I’m truly grateful that I joined Border Perspective this summer. The internship impacted me in so many ways, and I’m excited to keep learning and seeing God’s work unfold throughout the rest of my life’s journey.
