Navigating the Asylum Process: Challenges and Realities

Imagine leaving everything behind to seek safety in a new land, only to face a labyrinth of legal hurdles and uncertainty. This is the reality for many asylum seekers, as shared by Munatsi Manyande, Executive Director of DASH Network, in a recent conversation with our Executive Direction on Peacemakers Podcast. His insights shed light on the complexities and challenges within the asylum process.

Munatsi highlights a significant challenge: the prolonged waiting period for work permits. Asylum seekers often wait years without the legal ability to work, leaving them in a precarious position. "It never made sense to me," Munatsi reflects, "that the U.S. government has a process in place that says, if you have been displaced and you've had to flee danger, you're welcome to come. But good luck looking after yourself for up to two or three years."

Unlike other immigration processes, asylum seekers receive no government support during this waiting period. Munatsi shares, "If you do work illegally and get caught, that automatically notifies your asylum claim because you're deemed to have broken the law." This lack of support forces many into difficult decisions, risking their claims for survival.

Despite these challenges, organizations like DASH Network provide a beacon of hope. They offer housing, food, and community support, embodying what Munatsi describes as "radical hospitality." This approach not only meets practical needs but also fosters a sense of belonging and dignity.

The asylum process is fraught with challenges, but stories like Munatsi's remind us of the power of community and compassion.

As we reflect on these realities and this conversation, let us consider how we can support those seeking refuge and advocate for a more humane system.
