This opportunity is uniquely geared toward young adults interested in graphic design and ministry. This opportunity will allow you to have a first-hand experience within real life ministry. The residency opportunity involves working with print and digital media, as well as the possibility to learn about more specific marketing concepts.

Hugo & Eunice Moya

Hugo and Eunice Moya, pastor Iglesia Misionera Cristo Vive, a house Church founded by immigrants for immigrants in South Texas. The church is located only minutes away from the Reynosa/McAllen, Texas border crossing, the U.S. Border Patrol’s busiest station for apprehending and detaining migrants suspected of entering the country illegally.

For over two decades, the Moya’s has persisted in the slow and unrecognized work of church building, advocacy, and hospitality. As the needs on the border grow, the Moyas continue the work of ministering to immigrants—this time on the front lines.

Through the Moyas and their church network and connections, you will be serving and ministering to families living in South Texas, You will partner with local church leaders, learn about their justice efforts and be mobilizing into action.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 

+ WHEN SHOULD I BEGIN MY RESIDENCY APPLICATION?

We recommend that you begin applying at least 6 months before the start of the program. Applying does not commit you to anything, it simply connects you to a staff member to begin your acceptance process and see if this is a right program for you.

+ ARE BACKGROUND CHECKS REQUIRED?

Yes. Any person 18 or older is responsible for getting a background check.

+ WHAT IS YOUR PAYMENT SCHEDULE?

  • $150 non-refundable deposit due 15 days after on-line registration
  • 50% Payment due two months prior to your trip
  • Final Payment due one month prior your trip

The $150 non-refundable per participant deposit is due 15 days after your online registration. The deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable. Note, if you cancel your participantion within two months of your trip, the deposit will be lost. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact our office and we would be happy to discuss in more detail.

+ IS OUR BORDER JOURNEY SAFE?

Yes. Your safety is always a top priority. Thankfully, because of our two and a half decade ministry and involvement on the border, we have so many close relationships with partner churches and organizations. Churches or organizations that we visit are familiar with our visitors and we’ve worked hard to humbly earn their trust and respect. Because of these close friendships we are the first to know if something out of the ordinary comes up or is unsafe.

Our network of community relationships allows Border Perspective to engage with the community in a way that is trusted and safe.

On the first night of the trip, our staff will guide you through an orientation and go over safety protocols.

We are more than happy to talk in more detail about safety on this trip. Please feel free to contact our office for further conversation regarding your trip safety.

+ IS BORDER PERSPECTIVE AFFILIATED WITH A DENOMINATION?

Border Perspective serves as the mobilization and equipping arm of Iglesia Misionera Cristo Vive, an immigrant church ministering and serving families in marginalized communities on the U.S./Mexico border. Iglesia Misionera Cristo Vive is a part of the Missionary Church.

+ HOW ARE THE CHURCHES/ORZANIZATIONS WE VISIT SELECTED?

Border Perspective works alongside local Pastors, non-profit organizations, and the local church year round. The Moyas live and serve border communities year round and are well connected. Border Perspective collaborates with local Pastors to plan what organizations or churches you will be visiting during your trip.

+ WHAT IS THE DRESS CODE?

During your mission trip it is important that you make every effort to dress respectfully, modestly, and appropriately. Please understand there are different cultural norms in the places that you are visiting. While certain clothing may be acceptable back home, it might not be appropriate for your trip. Please review the dress code below and pack accordingly. If you have any questions, please contact our office at 612-718-5021.

Shirts: All trip participants should wear either a short-sleeve or long-sleeve t-shirt. Tank tops must be modest. Please note, no spaghetti strap tank tops or ripped/torn cut-off shirts.

Pants/Shorts: All participants should wear modest pants or shorts at all times on your trip. Please adhere to the following rules: Please be mindful of the length of your shorts. Follow the “fingertip length” rule to determine if your shorts are appropriate length. To do this, stand with your arms straight at your side and place your palm against the side of your legs. The length of your shorts should be at your fingertips or longer. Spandex pants/shorts are NOT allowed on your mission trip at anytime. This includes yoga pants or spandex athletic shorts.

Please bring a couple of nicer outfits for our weekly church service. It is recommended that ladies wear a skirt or summer dress. Men can wear khaki short or long pants with a nice t-shirt/shirt.

+ WHAT IS THE TRIP COST?

The trip cost is $850 per person. The costs covers all meals, service & learning opportunities, lodging and transportation in South Texas. It does NOT cover your flight to South Texas.

+ WHEN IS ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE?

Please plan to arrive by 3:00pm on the start day of your trip. Our local team will welcome you with dinner. The trip concludes with breakfast, debrief and departure on the 4th day. Please plan to depart by 12:00pm. We are happy to accommodate your travel plans so please contact our office if you need special arrival or departure plans.

+ WHAT SHOULD WE BRING ON THE TRIP?

Each trip participant should be sure to pack the following items:

  • Water Bottle
  • Sunglasses and/or Hat
  • Sunscreen & Insect Repellent
  • Personal Snacks (i.e. granola bars, trail mix)
  • Towel and toiletries (i.e. soap, shampoo, toothbrush, etc.)
  • Plan to dress casually and comfortably!
 
 

 

FOR PARENTS

 

+ HOW WILL MY SON/DAUGHTER KEEP IN TOUCH WITH ME?

During the residency, your child is required to contact their supporters and friends and family on a monthly bases. They will do this by sending out ministry updates of their time on the border. They will have limited access to phones, but will not always be immediately available. If a family emergency arises and you have to contact your child, you will need to contact Border Perspective, and we will notify our staff that your child needs to contact you as soon as possible.

+ Will my family be able to visit? Can I visit home during my residency?

For our 6 and 11 month residency programs, we encourage you to invite your loved ones to come and see what your ministry residency looks like and to meet your new friends and ministry partners. There is flexibility for you to visit home during special cirmustances, please let us know as you are applying if you forsee any important family engagements that will take place during your time with us.
